Buildings Alive team on 10th birthday company retreat

After a rigorous process, Buildings Alive is proud to announce that we have been certified as a B Corporation (B Corp). We join a global community of over 5000 companies across 158 industries in 85 countries.

B Corp is a global community of businesses with a common goal of using business for positive change and helping to “balance profit with purpose”.

Founded in 2006, B Lab, the non-profit organisation that helps certify B Corps, began with the idea of trying to change how businesses operated in the economy by introducing a new “stakeholder-driven model”. Their purpose is to make all businesses a force for good. B Lab creates the standards, policies, tools, and programs that help companies become B Corps. They push the B Corp community towards a consolidated effort to address the critical challenges facing society today.

So what does being certified mean? Certified B Corps are businesses striving to meet the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability measures. Instead of just focusing on profits, certified B Corps are obliged to think about how they can build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.

The certification process is holistic. Businesses wishing to become B Corps need to take the B Impact Assessment (BIA) and answer various questions relating to their workers, community, environment, governance, and customers. For certification, a business needs a minimum score of 80. Moreover, businesses must alter their constitution to include a “stakeholder clause” and a “purpose statement” to outline their commitment to considering the impact of their decisions on all stakeholders.

Being part of this community means a lot to Buildings Alive. We look forward to being part of a movement of purpose-driven companies that compete not only to be the best in the world but to be the best for the world.
