Buildings Alive started out ten years ago with a simple question: what would happen if you provided building operators with clear, daily feedback about the energy and environmental performance of their buildings?

Would they find it motivating? Would they experiment? Would they drive savings to the next level?

The answer was resounding. Yes, yes, and YES!

After ten years of working with the operators of hundreds of buildings worldwide that have collectively saved many hundreds of thousands of tonnes of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere, our tenth anniversary is a time to celebrate. An opportunity to reflect and be grateful for the fun, friendship, determination and dedication of our teammates, customers, friends and families.

Collectively we have achieved a lot, but, of course, it’s not nearly enough. It’s now time for us to tune our focus and redouble our efforts. This is the message* we’ve taken from some of the most widely admired figures working to decarbonize the built environment, messages they kindly shared at our recent celebration and in the short video that you can access here:

As we enter our second decade of operations, we are taking our data science-based approach to the next level. We are redefining the interface between buildings and ‘the grid’, creating grid-interactive efficient buildings that can secure cheaper, cleaner, more reliable energy supplies by harnessing renewable energy with smart technology. Our goal is to accelerate the clean energy transition so that we can all run on carbon-free energy, every hour, every day.

This transformation, which is now well underway, has required a considerable commitment from our team and clients who believe in what we are doing. Thank you to all those who are coming with us on the journey!

* Special thanks to John Derrick, Ruth Hendy, Geoff Hilbourne, Aurelie Chanel and the team at Grosvenor Place, Sydney, for providing the venue for our celebration and to our wonderful clients, partners, staff (past and present) and friends who came along – and those who couldn’t too of course! Thanks also to Davina Rooney from the GBCA and Carlos Flores from NABERS for the inspiring words they shared on the night and to Richard De Dear, Claire Pomroy, Eric Eberhardt, Paul Mathew, Tsiry Randria, Darryl Neate, Baden Hughes, Lane Burt, and Ruben Langbroek for their inspiring video messages.
